Doing whatever it takes is key. Going to meetings, staying away from old hangout spots and friends that you used will be necessary. You might have to get up early on Saturday morning to attend a rehab meeting or miss an outing with the family to ensure you’re doing what it takes to stay away from relapse. This can be difficult. Addiction is a way of life. It consumes everything you ever knew and turns it into something else. Your relationships are affected, work is different and ultimately, you lose everything you ever knew. Recovery is a new way of life. Sometimes, addicts aren’t ready to be open-minded to a new lifestyle. They’re scared to face new things. Getting stuck in a rut becomes your new normal and you’re not ready to give it up yet. If you’re not willing to keep an open mind and work towards recovery you’ll never be able to beat addiction.
You’re worried it won’t be worth it.
Many times, making promises can end badly. While you might have made a promise to something or someone in the past that went wrong, recovery will never steer you wrong. You’ll be healthier, happier, and better off, overall. Be honest with yourself. Do whatever it takes to keep your promise of sobriety. And, if you fail, get up and try it again. Never lose hope and faith that you can one day stay sober forever. Until you know it’s worth it – for health or happiness reasons – you won’t seek help.
You don’t want to find recovery.
Each time you drink too much or get too high you find yourself begging for help. Whether it’s physically saying you need help or mentally thinking it, you are pleading for support and help. Your family and friends might be wondering why you continue to use but the answer is simple. You want to keep getting high or getting drunk. If you’re willing to put yourself in this position so easily, you’ll never find real recovery. Until you’re ready, you’ll continue down the path of addiction.
You don’t have the will power.
Sometimes, as we get out of rehab and back into the world, we thrive. Life without drugs or alcohol is amazing. We love having our relationships back. We love having our old life again.
