One of the most often overlooked factors of a committed recovery is making sure you keep yourself healthy. In addition to making sure you’re healthy during your road to recovery, it’s also important to remain healthy to ensure that you’re able to face triggers with a positive outcome.
In our last few blog posts, Freedom Detox, drug treatment in Charlotte, has talked in detail about recovery and how to deal with triggers during recovery. It’s important to understand that along with identifying triggers, realizing that they can and will happen, and making a plan to help face the triggers, taking care of yourself is also key for fulfilling your commitment to recovery.
Triggers are handled better when you’re healthy. Eating a well-balanced diet, getting at least 8 hours of sleep every night and exercising three or more times a week are all part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In addition, leading a healthy lifestyle also includes being aware of your emotions.

These four emotions can lead you to relapse without being directly faced with a trigger. Making sure you keep these emotions in check and positive can keep you from relapsing, as well as, help you to face triggers in a mindset that’s sound and ready to overcome. Eat when you’re hungry, sleep or meditate when you’re tired, talk with a friend or support group when you’re lonely or angry. Don’t let these emotions overcome you to the point that you’re not able to deal with them in a healthy way.
In addition to maintaining a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle, it’s also important to understand that it’s not OK to test yourself. You can deal with triggers when you face them, but testing the waters to see what happens is a bad idea.
Walking by a bar to see if you’re able to do so without having a craving or meeting an addict friend for lunch to see what happens isn’t a good practice of self-care. Let these situations happen naturally without testing yourself to see how strong you are. Chances are you’re not very strong in the beginning stages of recovery and that is OK. You’re not expected to be as strong as a recovering addict that’s been in recovery for 10 years.
If you know that walking by a bar is a definite trigger for you, for example, then do not knowingly walk by a bar to see if your recovery is as strong as you believe it to be. Maybe that time you are able to avoid going into the bar. But the seed of a trigger is planted. Something else you have not identified yet as a trigger can occur, and the combination can lead you right to a drink.
Dealing With Triggers
Identifying your triggers, knowing that you will be faced with them at some point, developing a plan, and engaging in good self-care will enable you to manage your triggers in a healthy and positive way during recovery.
