The detox process can also vary depending on how long and what level of the frequency the drug was used. If someone had gotten to the point where they were on the drug more than they were sober, the transition will be more difficult and will probably require the patient to be under supervised medical care.
Some programs will suggest detoxification that includes the use of other drugs in order to ease the transition and lessen cravings for the drug. In cases of opioid addiction, the drugs methadone or buprenorphine may be given to the patient over a period of time in order to lessen the withdrawal effects. Benzodiazepines have been used to treat withdrawal from cocaine and methamphetamine addiction. The use of other drugs to treat drug addiction is a controversial topic, but the ultimate decision lies in the hands of the patient and his or her physician.
Once the physical detox is complete, the treatment isn’t over. Some may even say that is when the hardest part begins. A complete rehabilitation program will work on all aspects of addiction in order to break the cycle. This includes addressing psychological and emotional issues that may have led to addiction. The program should also teach a patient how to learn new ways of dealing with life’s struggles without turning to drugs.
