Drug Rehab in Charlotte: How to Explain Your Addiction to Loved Ones

Broadly defined, addiction is the inability to stop engaging in behavior regardless of the adverse consequences that result from the behavior.

According to addictionandrecovery.org, “Addiction can be physical or psychological and is oftentimes both. This is especially the case with addictions to substances such as alcohol and/or illicit drugs. Although many people think of drugs and alcohol when the term ‘addiction’ is used, there are a plethora of other addictions an individual could have including gambling, pornography, food, the internet, and various other things. As made plain by various statistics regarding addiction, it remains a profound and potentially problematic issue in this contemporary era.”

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health revealed that 9.3% of people 12 and older required treatment as a result of alcohol or illegal drug problem.

Admitting that you have a substance abuse problem can be one of the hardest things you’ll ever do in life. Whether you’re admitting the addiction to yourself or your loved ones, it will be a difficult and emotional thing. Thankfully, once you do admit your problem, you can then begin the recovery process.

Confessing your dependency on loved ones is significant in recovery, as not doing so can aid in maintaining a disposition of secrecy that can cause a relapse. Becoming clean means coming clean. Sharing your burdens with your loved ones is a major step in the right direction.

Though making the decision to share your substance abuse problem with loved ones might be liberating, actually doing so is easier said than done. Most addicts have a difficult time finding the right time and place, as well as, the right words when trying to share such a serious secret with loved ones.
