World Kindness Day – November 13, 2017

mental health facilities in Raleigh, NCDid you know that random acts of kindness benefit your mental health? Kindness has been found to stimulate the brain and increase your body's natural production of serotonin. Serotonin helps you balance your mood and is also responsible for making you feel happy and calm. World Kindness Day will be celebrated on November 13th, and the Random Act of Kindness Foundation (RAOKF) is challenging people across American and around the globe to perform one random act of kindness on that day. If you want help from the best mental health facilities in Raleigh, NC, call Legacy Freedom.

A random act of kindness impacts you and the person who is the recipient of your kindness. It also affects the people around you who witness the act. A study conducted by the RAOKF found that people who saw a random act of kindness had an increase in the amount of oxytocin in their brain. Oxytocin is commonly referred to as the love hormone. This hormone lowers blood pressure and helps improve your overall cardiovascular health. However, the most significant benefit of a boost of oxytocin is an increase in optimism and self-esteem!

Can kindness cure anxiety?
A recent study by the University of British Columbia found that people who struggled with high levels of anxiety that performed at least six random acts of kindness each week for one month showed a drastic improvement. After one month the study group reported higher relationship satisfaction, a decrease in the desire to avoid social situations, and an increase in positive moods. While kindness may not cure anxiety, it can surely help make it more manageable.

Kindness also has a significant impact on those who struggle with depression. Researchers from the Case Western Reserve University of Medicine studied acts of kindness and people with depression. Their research uncovered that when people give of themselves their life satisfaction improves, their mortality is delayed, they show improved self-realization, and their physical health is improved. Furthermore, feelings of good fortune and well-being are increased and, most notably of all, feelings of depression were significantly decreased.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that a Harvard University study linked happiness with kindness. After surveying people in more than 136 countries, results revealed that people who were generous with their wealth or possessions were happiest overall.

If you find yourself in need of a mood boost as the holiday season approaches commit to practicing one random act of kindness for someone on November 13th. The act of kindness doesn't have to be extravagant or expensive. Ways to show kindness include running an errand for a neighbor, buying a stranger a cup of coffee, holding the door for someone, thanking a co-worker unexpectedly, or making a donation to a charitable organization that you love. One random act of kindness has the power to help many people in a multitude of ways.
