Mental Illness in Hockey Players

Mental Health Therapist in Charlotte, NCWith its board rocking hits, gloves off fistfights, and flashing net lights, the sport of hockey has long been viewed as a game played by tough guys. While the NFL is facing harsh criticism for their concussion protocols, brain injuries, and resulting mental health issues that players face, the NHL is also facing a mental health crisis among its players. If you need a mental health therapist in Charlotte, NC that you can depend on, call Legacy Freedom today.

A study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry found that former NHL players have a high rate of psychiatric disorders. Of the 33 subjects in the study, 19 participants experienced mental disorders. Ranging in age from 34 to 71 the players were found to have suffered anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

There is some suggestion that, like their NFL counterparts, these former NHL players may be exhibiting increased psychiatric symptoms as a result of multiple head traumas or concussions sustained throughout their career. A lawsuit from more than 100 former players alleged that the NHL doesn't do enough to protect players from concussions. A team physician was quoted in the suit expressing concerns over the handling of these types of injuries.

Over the last few years, numerous former NHL superstars have penned books about their experiences in the hockey world. These stories strip away the glamour and hype of the sport and they reveal tough topics like childhood sexual abuse at the hands of coaches and struggles with addiction and depression. Men who are seen as icons in both sports and masculinity reveal that the real challenges they have faced haven't been on the ice at all. Most often they have occurred in the locker room and away from the public eye and team management.

As the NHL struggles to remove the stigma of players who come forward and admit their mental health issues or their struggles with chemical dependency, current and former players are speaking out. In doing so, they are hoping to keep both younger players and fans from feeling like they must endure their struggles in silence.
