It’s important to think about others when using these terms. They can be very hurtful and disrespectful. What seems like a harmless term that you mean in a humorous way can be very upsetting to others. There are other ways to get your point across if you think about it.

Mental health is getting more awareness in today’s time than it ever has, historically. That’s why these terms and phrases can be more hurtful. We understand what mental illness is and how it can affect people. We are more aware of the symptoms and the experiences of those who have a mental illness.

That’s why we should be a little more careful when throwing around terms that might seem like harmless banter. Below, you’ll find several of these terms.

Bipolar. This condition is a serious form of depression that can be very damaging for someone who is suffering from it. Bipolar disorder is a condition that causes an individual to swing from a manic state to a depressive one. It can be very difficult to deal with. Oftentimes, it can be easy to label someone as bipolar in an attempt to be funny because of their occasional mood swings. However, reconsider your words before doing so.

Crazy. Historically, those with mental illnesses were labeled as crazy. It did not have a humorous definition at that time. Those that were labeled crazy were considered insane and often delusional. Today, we tend to call people who are funny or boisterous crazy. However, when we take a look at the actual meaning of the term and how it can be hurtful and disrespectful to others, it takes on a whole new meaning.

Schizo. Schizophrenia is a very serious condition that can be concerning for those, directly and indirectly, involved in a situation where this condition is an issue. Schizo is a new term that can be used to describe someone who is ruthless, has a tendency to "walk on the wild side" or someone who is a daredevil. In reality, schizophrenia has an entirely different meaning.
